About Me
My interests, educational background, and family
Students learning how to work with fractions … children writing essays they never thought they would be able to complete … kids enjoying creating skits that help them remember major events in American history…
These are all moments that make teaching special to me. I have been teaching fifth grade since the 2009-2010 school year, and my teaching credential is from Ottawa University.
I am very excited to be teaching at Overland Trail Elementary School, as I believe completely in the Blue Valley School District's goal of "Education Beyond Expectations" for all students. My own two children attend Blue Valley schools; my son, Declan, attends Blue Valley Northwest, where he is active in the marching band and sports, and my daughter, Morgan, attends Oak Hill Elementary, where she is proud to be a Hawk!
I come to teaching as a second career. Before teaching, I was a newspaper reporter covering such beats as higher education and minority communities at The Kansas City Star. I earned a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in political science and communication at the University of California-San Diego. I work to help all my students gain the organizational and word choice skills crucial to being an excellent writer and communicator.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, playing tennis, watching international soccer, and getting my son, Declan, and Morgan, involved in all sorts of fun activities, from sports to the performing arts.
