Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Jan. 26, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are working in Topic 8, which involves variables, expressions, and order of operations. Social Studies: Students are studying the geography, climate, and lives of people in the New England, Middle, and Southern British colonies in the 1600s and 1700s. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are working in Benchmark Unit 4. The essential question is: How can other perspectives help us evaluate the world? The focus is on fiction and poetry and analyzing author’s point of view. Students will read excerpts from the novels The Journal of Wong Ming Chung: A Chinese Miner, California, 1852 by Laurence Yep, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Important Dates: Feb. 1: Cougar Chorus event at Overland Trail Middle School; PTO Board Meeting Feb. 2: PTO Family Fun Night – 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Feb. 5: Portfolio Night – 6-7:30 p.m. – Please stop by any time between those times to see your student’s online portfolio Feb. 7 and 8: Conferences, if requested by parents/teachers Feb. 9: No school Feb. 14: Valentine’s Party – more information to come later Feb. 19: No school – President’s Day Feb. 20: No school – Professional Learning for Staff Feb. 23 – Wax Museum Presentations - 2-3:15 p.m. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework from all Reading/Writing and Math classes, as well. We have a Twitter account. Please follow otefraney5th.
