Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Sept. 29, 2017 Class Information: The field Trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is set for Oct. 6. Please remember to send a home lunch unless your child signed up for a school lunch. Our new OTE principal, Mrs. Cooper, visited all the fifth-grade classes today to remind them about the importance of respect and compassion. If you could please discuss the importance of respecting all members of the OTE family, including all other students and staff, with your child, I would appreciate it! Book Fair Information: The 2017 Fall Book Fair is coming up! It will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd through Thursday, October 5th. Don't miss our family night event on Tuesday, October 3rd from 6-8 p.m. We will have lots of fun activities, games, and, of course, the opportunity to shop at the fair! We will also be having our favorite event, ‘Donuts with Dads’ on Thursday, October 5th from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Bring your dad or special guest for donuts, coffee and shopping! We still need volunteers to help with the fair, it is a fun way to get involved with OTE and see your kids in action at the same time! To volunteer, please visit the online sign up at: https://otepto.membershiptoolkit.com/dashboard/volunteerform/16410 You can also shop the OTE book fair online by visiting: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/overlandtrail Academics: Math: We are working on Topic 3, which involves estimating products (finding approximate answers to multiplication problems using rounding), using exponents (ex: 4³ means 4 x 4 x 4 = 64) and multiplying whole numbers. Social Studies: We are beginning our unit on Native Americans, studying how they adapted to their environments to build their housing, make their clothing, and find food to eat. Reading/Writing: Some fifth-grade reading classes are beginning Unit 2 in Benchmark. The essential question is: “Why do we value certain qualities in people?” Students will be reading fiction stories, including excepts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. Students also will be writing their own realistic fiction stories. Important Dates: Week of Oct. 2 – Various Book Fair events Oct. 6 – The 5th-grade field trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (8:40 – 2:20) Oct. 23, 25, 26 – Parent-teacher conferences – Oct. 26 – 27 – No school due to conferences. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your students bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. An orange form explaining Great Expectations is going home today. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. Daily homework will be posted on the Web site, as well. We have a Twitter account. Please follow otefraney5th.
