Weekly Newsletter Nov. 17, 2017 Class Information:
Academics: Math: The current topic for most classes is Topic 5, dividing by two-digit divisors. Don’t forget the easy way to remember the steps in long division: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down, Repeat/Remainder; Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Rover Social Studies: Students finished learning about 8 important European explorers and enjoyed writing to themselves as if they were one of the explorers inviting them along on an exploration. After the Thanksgiving break, students will begin learning about early European settlements, including Jamestown and Plymouth. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are continuing to work on Unit 3 in Benchmark entitled “Cultivating Natural Resources.” The essential question is “How do we decide which resources we should develop?” Students will be working with informational text, identifying cause/effect text structure, identifying objective and subjective points of view, analyzing graphic features, such as charts and graphics, and analyzing multiple accounts of the same topic.” In Unit 3, students will work on writing informational reports. Important Dates: Nov. 22-24: No school for the Thanksgiving holiday. Enjoy! Nov. 29 – Fifth grade goes to Overland Trail Middle School for the OTMS fall play in the afternoon Dec. 20 – Half-day – Winter Parties/End of 2nd Quarter Winter Break – Dec. 21-Jan. 3 – School resumes Jan. 4 Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Reading/Writing: Some fifth-grade reading classes are still working on Unit 2 in Benchmark, while others have moved on to Unit 3. Unit 3 is on “Cultivating Natural Resources.” The essential question is “How do we decide which resources we should develop?” Students will be working with informational text, identifying cause/effect text structure, identifying objective and subjective points of view, analyzing graphic features, such as charts and graphics, and analyzing multiple accounts of the same topic.” In Unit 3, students will work on writing informational reports. Science: Students made clay models of the Earth in connection to their study of Earth’s systems. Each fifth-grade class is able to bring 3-5 parent chaperones on the field trip to the State Capitol on Nov. 17. See the letter that will came home with students this week and that I sent in an e-mail with more details, and let me know if you are interested in attending. Also, for multiple reasons, the OTE cafeteria is no longer able to provide sack lunches on field trip days for students. All students must bring their own sack lunch (it can be either in a disposable bag or a lunch box that is kept on the bus).

No costume “weapons” may be brought to school, e.g. light sabers, swords, toy guns. Costumes worn at school should not depict violence or gore. Students should have costumes that do not require time-consuming assistance with makeup, dressing, etc. The OTE costume parade will take place at 2:30 on Oct. 31, with fifth-grade parading around the track outside first. Then, we will have our fifth-grade Fall Festival in the gym until 3:20. I look forward to seeing parents that afternoon!
