Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Sept. 24, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are in Topic 3, which involves multi-digit multiplication and exponents. iLit: (Integrated Literacy) – We are working in iLit Unit 2, with an essential question, “What can we learn by studying relationships?” As part of Project-Based Learning related to Unit 2, some students will be researching author Mark Twain or the Mississippi River. All students will be creating a North American artifact near the end of the unit to go with our study of Native Americans from the 1400s and 1500s. Reading: We are reading and analyzing several excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by acclaimed American novelist Mark Twain. The reading skills we will be working on over the next three weeks include identifying key events and writing a summary and comparing and contrasting two characters and themes in two texts. Students are continuing with their nightly reading homework, reading between 5 and 10 pages of their novel and writing a half-page response in their Reader Response Journals. Writing: We will be mailing our letters to national park superintendents soon. Next up, writing fictional narratives following the writing process. Social Studies: Students had a great time last week investigating Native American artifacts in a traveling trunk available to students in the Blue Valley School District. Now, they are researching the Native American groups that lived in certain regions of North America that eventually became part of the United States. Students will create Google Slide presentations to share their information with the rest of the class. Science: We are taking a break from Science for a couple weeks to concentrate on Social Studies. Important Dates: Sept. 26 – 5th-grade STEM Night in the Library/Media Center – 6-7 p.m. Oct. 19 – Field trip to Topeka – 8:45 a.m. to around 2 p.m. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s yellow “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework there as well. We have a Twitter account.
