Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Feb. 8, 2019 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Topic 10 involves adding and subtracting mixed numbers. iLit: (Integrated Literacy) – Our next unit is iLit Unit 6. The essential question is: “How can people overcome challenges?” Reading: We will read fictional stories, including an excerpt from “The Call of the Wild” about survival in the wild. This ties in to our work with Julie of the Wolves, which also is excerpted in this unit. Writing: Students will write narratives. Science: Students will study gravity and the sun and how Earth’s movements around the sun affect us. Social Studies: Students will study the growing tensions between the colonists and Britain in the run-up to the Revolutionary War. Important Dates: Feb. 6: Last day for Major Saver fundraiser card orders Feb. 8: Last day to order the 5th-grade magazine Feb. 11 – Portfolio Share Night – 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 – Optional parent-teacher conferences 4-8 p.m. Feb. 13 – Valentine’s Day classroom parties – more information to come later Feb. 14 – Optional parent-teacher conferences 8:20 – 4 p.m. Feb. 14 and 15 – No school Feb. 22: Visit to OTMS to learn about transition to middle school – 12:20 p.m. – 2:50 p.m. Feb. 26: Spring Picture Day: Visit OTMS to watch school play – 1-2:45 p.m. March 1 – Wax Museum presentations at OTE – 2 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s yellow “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework there as well. We have a Twitter account.
