Weekly Newsletter March 30, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are moving into Topic 11, which involves multiplying and dividing fractions. Social Studies: Continuing with understanding how anger at Britain built up in the 13 colonies until it reached the boiling point of the Revolutionary War, including the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are now in Benchmark Unit 5, which is called “Technology’s Impact on Society.” The unit focuses on informational text and poetry about technological developments, such as inventions during the Industrial Age. Important Dates: April 2 and April 4 – State assessments: 8:45 – 10:00 April 6: Last Skate Party of the school year at Skate City – 5-7 p.m. Beach Party theme! May 25: New Last Day of School (1/2 day), per Superintendent Todd White Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Social Studies: Next up: Understanding how anger at Britain built up in the 13 colonies until it reached the boiling point of the Revolutionary War, starting with the French and Indian War, Proclamation of 1763 and the Quartering Act. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are now in Benchmark Unit 5, which is called “Technology’s Impact on Society.” The unit focuses on informational text and poetry about technological developments, such as inventions during the Industrial Age. Important Dates: March 7: Field Trip to see the play version of “Tuck Everlasting” at The Coterie Theatre at Crown Center in downtown Kansas City, Missouri – Please let me know if your child needs a school lunch that day.
