The essential question is: How can other perspectives help us evaluate the world? The focus is on fiction and poetry and analyzing author’s point of view. Students will read excerpts from the novels The Journal of Wong Ming Chung: A Chinese Miner, California, 1852 by Laurence Yep, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, as well as poems by Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes. Half of the normal reading/writing time will be devoted to working on the Wax Museum projects in homeroom classrooms. Important Dates: Winter Break – Dec. 21-Jan. 3 – School resumes Jan. 4 Skate City Scavenger Hunt Skate Party – Jan 5. Food Drive/Spirit Week – Week of Jan. 8 Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework from all Reading/Writing and Math classes, as well.
