Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Oct. 12, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are working on Topic 4, which involves dividing by one-digit divisors. iLit: (Integrated Literacy) – We are beginning iLit Unit 3, which revolves around the essential question: “What is the connection between resources and settlement?” Reading: We are reading non-fiction and opinion articles about agriculture, specifically corn and how it is grown and used in the world. The reading skills we will be working on over the next three weeks include identifying main ideas and key supporting details, along with cause and effect text structure, locating information in a chart or graphic, and subjective/objective language. Writing: Students will be writing an informational report related to how corn is produced in the United States. Social Studies: Students will be studying European explorers in the 1500s and European settlements in North America in the early 1600s. They will discuss how explorers and early settlers interacted with Native Americans. Science: We will study how ecosystems change, especially due to human impacts. Important Dates: Oct. 19 – Field trip to Topeka – 9-ish a.m. to around 2 p.m. – Students need to bring a disposable sack lunch. Oct. 22 – Social Studies project due – Students make a kachina doll or totem pole Oct 22, 24, and 25 – Parent-teacher conferences Oct. 25 and Oct. 26 – No school Oct. 31 – Costume parade/parties in the late afternoon. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s yellow “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework there as well. We have a Twitter account.
