Weekly Newsletter Oct. 20, 2017 Class Information: OTE will celebrate Healthy Living Spirit Week the week of Oct. 23: Monday: Wear blue to represent dairy products as part of healthy eating. Tuesday: Wear sweats to represent the importance of relaxation for a healthy mind Wednesday: Wear athletic clothing to represent the importance of exercise Conferences: Students brought home a conference reminder note with their date/time in their Friday folders last Thursday. They also wrote the times in their assignment notebooks. I look forward to chatting with families next week! Our second BoxTop competition to raise money for OTE continues until Nov. 13. OTE will host a Veterans’ Day Assembly at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. Please consult the flyer that went home recently about it. Academics: Math: The next topic is Topic 4, dividing by one-digit divisors. Social Studies: Thank you for the family help on the students’ Social Studies Projects. Wow! The kachina dolls and totem poles are amazing! Look at Twitter or our class website for a photo of the projects! Students also have been working in a group at school to prepare presentations abou the environment/food/shelter/clothing of Native Americans in a certain region of the country. Reading/Writing: For students in my homeroom for reading/writing: The family letter assignments are due Monday, Oct. 23. The Tuck Everlasting poster project on your own magic spring is due Tuesday, Oct. 24. Some fifth-grade reading classes are working on Unit 2 in Benchmark. The essential question is: “Why do we value certain qualities in people?” Students will be reading fiction stories, including excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. Students also will be writing their own realistic fiction stories. Important Dates: Oct. 23, 25, 26 – Parent-teacher conferences – Oct. 26 – 27 – No school due to conferences. Oct. 30 – No school for Professional Development Nov. 10 – Veterans’ Day assembly Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your students bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Weekly Newsletter Oct. 16, 2017 Class Information: This week, students are asked to bring in coins to support United Way efforts to help less fortunate people throughout Johnson County. Help fifth grade compete against the other grades for most money collected! Conferences: Students brought home a conference reminder note with their date/time in their Friday folders last Thursday. Social Studies: Students are working on their projects researching a group of Native Americans living in a particular region and presenting their information to the class. HOME PROJECT: Students brought home information last week about a home project due this Friday, Oct. 20. I also sent out the details in an e-mail to all parents this morning. Students are to create a kachina doll or totem pole to share with the class. The assignment was in their Friday Folders and in their Social Studies folders in their binders. Weekly Newsletter Oct. 6, 2017 Class Information: The whole class greatly enjoyed our visit to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art today. We saw artworks from the American colonial period and Western Expansion era, as well as wonderful crafts from Native American tribes in various North American regions. The Chipotle restaurant at 7040 W. 135th St. is holding an OTE fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 4 – 8 p.m. Half the proceeds that night will come to OTE! Monday, Oct. 9, begins our second BoxTop competition to raise money for OTE. The contest for prizes for classes that bring in the most BoxTops ends Nov. 13. Social Studies: Students are beginning a project in which small groups will research Native Americans from a certain region and study their food, clothing, and shelter, and how they adapted to their environment. Then, each group will present their information to the reset of the class through a poster, Google Slides presentation, or skit.
