Weekly Newsletter Feb. 27, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are working on Topic 9, which involves adding and subtracting fractions, as well as making equivalent fractions and writing fractions in simplest form. Topic 10 will involve adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Social Studies: We will finish our studies of the colonies by learning about the Southern Colonies this week. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are wrapping up Benchmark Unit 4 and beginning Benchmark Unit 5, which is called “Technology’s Impact on Society.” The unit focuses on informational text and poetry about technological developments, such as inventions during the Industrial Age. Important Dates: Feb. 26 – March 2 – Read Across America Week – Monday – PJs; Tuesday – Crazy Socks; Wednesday – Crazy Hair Day; Thursday – Wear Red or Blue; Friday – Wear Green March – Read Across America – See flyer in the Friday folder from Mrs. Bird about optional Read Across America activity March 7: Field Trip to see the play version of “Tuck Everlasting” at The Coterie Theatre at Crown Center in downtown Kansas City, Missouri – Please let me know if your child needs a school lunch that day. March 15 – Baby pictures due for fifth-grade celebration. Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s green “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Academics: Math: Most classes are working on Topic 9, which involves adding and subtracting fractions, as well as making equivalent fractions and writing fractions in simplest form. Social Studies: We have been studying the Middle Colonies. Reading/Writing: Many reading classes are working in Benchmark Unit 4. The essential question is: How can other perspectives help us evaluate the world? The focus is on fiction and poetry and analyzing author’s point of view. Students will read excerpts from the novels The Journal of Wong Ming Chung: A Chinese Miner, California, 1852 by Laurence Yep, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Some students have begun work in Unit 5, about Technology’s Impact on Society. Important Dates: Feb. 19: No school – President’s Day Feb. 20: No school – Professional Learning for Staff Feb. 22: Fifth-grade visit to Overland Trail Middle School – 1:30–3:20 - Lunch 12:45-1:15 Feb. 23 – Wax Museum Presentations in costume 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. in the gym. Social Studies: We will be getting back to Social Studies and Science next week. In Social Studies, students will study the Middle Colonies.
