Ms. Franey’s Fabulous Fifth Graders
Weekly Newsletter Nov. 30, 2018 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are working in Topic 7, dividing with decimal numbers. iLit: (Integrated Literacy) – We are working in iLit Unit 4, which revolves around the essential question, “How can other perspectives help us understand the world?” Reading: We will read poetry and fiction related mostly to the immigrant experience in America. We will read a fictionalized story of a Chinese immigrant during the Gold Rush in California and a chapter from the book Esperanza Rising about a Mexican immigrant who comes to work in the fields of California during the Great Depression. Writing: In iLit Unit 4, students will write opinion pieces. Science: Students are studying Earth’s four systems (hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere), how the systems produce weather and climate, and how the systems affect Earth’s surface. Important Dates: Dec. 17 – Deadline to donate auction items Dec. 20 – Half-day – Dismissal at 11:45 a.m. – end of 2nd quarter – Jingle Bell assembly 10 a.m. – classroom winter parties in the afternoon Dec. 21-Jan. 4 – No school – Winter break Jan. 7 – School resumes for 3rd quarter Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s yellow “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site. Please visit: http://www.otefraneyfabulous.weebly.com. The Weekly newsletter will be posted on Fridays on the Web site. I post daily homework there as well. We have a Twitter account.
