Weekly Newsletter April 19, 2019 Class Information:
Academics: Math: Most classes are working in Topic 14, which involves making and using line plots with fractions and mixed numbers. iLit: (Integrated Literacy) – We are working in iLit Unit 8. The unit is a Science-related unit about matter. Reading: We are reading non-fiction articles about matter (example: states of matter are liquid, water, and gas). Writing: Students are working on a research project involving studying a 20th- or 21st-Century war America was involved in and then completing a research report on that war. Science: Students will be studying matter. Social Studies: Students will study the Revolutionary War and why and how the patriots (American) side won. Important Dates: April 22 – THIS IS NOW A SCHOOL DAY AS A SNOW MAKE-UP DAY – We will take the Math MAP test April 23 – Reading MAP test April 26 – Baby photos and money due for end-of-year celebration May 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 – Band instrument try-out night – If your student is joining band for next year, he/she should go to OTMS on one of these afternoons between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. to try the various instruments May 16 – Fifth-grade end-of-year celebration at Dave & Buster’s – 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 17 – Field Day May 24 – Last day of school – Half day Parent signatures: Assignment notebook: 5th-grade families are asked to sign their student’s assignment notebook (in their binder) EVERY DAY. All homework is listed in the notebook. Checkbook: 5th-grade families also are asked to sign their student’s yellow “checkbook” on the highlighted line AT THE END OF EACH WEEK. This checkbook shows your student’s bonuses for awesome “Great Expectations” behavior (safety, respect, responsibility) and fines for where students need to improve. Students are trying to earn enough “money” to attend the quarterly reward party and items at the semester auction. Class Communication: We have a Web site.
